My top favourite novels
My top favourite novels, in no particular order.
I’ve picked these because they are stories that I return to again and again. Some of them you will have heard of, but hopefully some will be new authors that you will try.
I have deliberately not told you any real detail about these books because I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment.
I also listen to stories but that’s a list for another day.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue By V.E. Schwab.
Best love story I’ve read.
The Demon Cycle series By Peter V. Brett.
The first one, The Painted Man will have you hooked.
Time and Time Again by Ben Elton.
Can the hero prevent a world disaster that’s already occurred? Or are there stronger forces at work?
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. (All 15 of them).
Epic quest with a cast of thousands, with an historic feel. The world he creates is amazing.
Under the Skin by Michel Faber.
Creepy and clever.
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber
Dickensian porno.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
Underworld and out of this world. Parallel universe story.
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. (More commonly known as A Game of Thrones).
Epic fantasy. Told with an historical feel.
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
A historical novel set in the 12th century about building a cathedral
The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel
Well researched story about a Neanderthal family and early man.
The Black Prism by Brent Weeks.
High fantasy.
The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie.
Best anti hero I’ve read in the first book, The Blade Itself. Be warned: very gruesome.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik.
Fantasy fairy tale.
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes.
Based on Kentucky’s first mobile library run by pioneering women.
Dust by Hugh Howey.
A clever dystopian novel. Much better than the series which changed things too much.
